The National Common Entrance Test (NCET) aims to streamline admission for students who have completed their 12th and wish to pursue undergraduate studies in disciplines like BA, B.Sc, and B.Com with integrated B.Ed programs.
To facilitate this National level combined entrance exam, the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) has forged collaborations with Regional Education Institutions (REIs), Indian Institute of Technology (IITs), National Institute of Technology (NITs), and various other state and central level universities.
Implementing this National Common Entrance Test (NCET) simplifies the various admission processes and determines admission in a Dual Major Programme. The first major is in Education with School Specific Stage specialization, and the second major is in an opted discipline, such as BA+B.Ed, B.Sc+ B.Ed, or B.Com+B.Ed. However, admission to these universities/institutions will be further evaluated with their set criteria.
So, What is going to change? The Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) program, once typically spanning one or two years, has undergone substantial changes.
As per the New National Education Policy, only a four-year B.Ed teaching training will be considered eligible after 2030. Therefore, National Common Entrance Test is a strategic mechanism for advancing the broader objectives of educational reform and development outlined in the policy. And what does the policy say?
“In order to maintain uniform standards for Teacher Education, the admission to pre-service teacher preparation programmes shall be through suitable subject and aptitude test conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) and shall be standardized keeping in view the linguistic and cultural diversity of the country”
NEP 2020
So, It is important to understand the role of the National Common Entrance Test in this context and its association with the NTA.

Purpose of National Common Entrance Test (NCET 2024)
The B.Ed program has already been offered as one-year, two-year, and even four-year integrated courses in conjunction with undergraduate studies. So, what’s new in it? What is the purpose of National Common Entrance Test (NCET 2024)?
- Transition to Unified (common) Entrance Exam: Previously, individual institutes and universities held their entrance exams, which resulted in inefficiency and consumed lots of time. Implementing a unified entrance exam streamlines the process, similar to how NEET does for medical admissions and GATE for engineering. Simplifies the admission process by providing a single gateway to enter various undergraduate programs for B.Ed.
- Standardization: Ensures a standardized evaluation process for all applicants, promoting fairness and equity in admissions.
- Merit-Based Selection: Facilitates merit-based selection of candidates, prioritizing academic excellence and aptitude.
- Efficiency: Reduces administrative burden on institutions by centralizing the assessment process, saving time and resources.
- Alignment with Policies: Supports the objectives of educational policies like the National Education Policy (NEP) by promoting transparency and accessibility in higher education.
- Quality Assurance: Enhances the quality of incoming students by attracting talented individuals through a rigorous entrance examination.
- Integration: Fosters integration among different educational institutions and disciplines by offering a common platform for admissions.
